I have been in private practice since 1991, and every day, I feel blessed to have the opportunity to help people look and feel better. Along the way, I have developed so many substantial and great relationships with my patients and staff, and this is something I never take for granted.

Since I was 15 years old, I knew that I wanted to be a dentist. Back then, my older cousin, Bernie, whom I've always admired, said he was going to be a dentist, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I never changed my mind, and to this day, I know that I have chosen well. I am as happy today with my choice of profession as I was when I made that decision all those years ago. I have a deep passion for what I do, and I hope my patients and team see that in me every day.

I believe that the practice of dentistry is a lifetime pursuit. I constantly seek the best continuing education experiences so that I can expand my knowledge and skills. By doing this, I can provide my patients with the most up-to-date information available, which greatly assists in their dental care. I have completed all continuums of education at the Pankey Institute, and I am also a faculty member for the Spear Institute and speaker for the Pride Institute.

I enjoy learning about and working with each of our patients individually. I find it incredibly fulfilling to work towrds understanding a patient's ultimate goals for their mouth and embarking on a journey with them to achieve those goals. I feel my extensive educational background and relentless pursuit of professional information and technology immensely benefit, and even exceed, my patients' goals for their oral health.

Digital Dentures, with Dr. Bryan Shanahan in Flagstaff, Arizona

Dr. Bryan Shanahan, dentist in Flagstaff, Arizona, uses digital dentures for his patients, made by a company called Global Science Systems in Scottsdale, Arizona.  These Avident digital dentures are completely computer-driven.  After Global Science Systems receives the information from Dr. Shanahan, they design the bite on the computer to get the most ideal circumstances for the bite.

Where traditional dentures take 4-5 visits, Avidents take only 2 visits, says Dr. Shanahan and only 2 1/2 weeks to be completely finished.  Because it's actually milled from a solid block of porcelain, the fit is far superior.  There is also no bad breath or sore spots like with the traditional denture, he says.  Patients also don't need gel or adhesive because they fit so well.

Veneers with Dr. Bryan Shanahan of Flagstaff, Arizona

Veneers are a thin sheet of porcelain placed over the teeth to improve a patient's smile to the aesthetic that they like, says Dr. Bryan Shanahan, dentist in Flagstaff, Arizona.  Dr. Shanahan removes a minimal amount of surface enamel of the tooth in most cases and creates the veneer itself.

Dr. Shanahan does a procedure called bonding, where he sticks it onto the tooth to give it strength.  Like putting formica onto a counter top, he says, the formica itself is not that strong but since it's glued onto the counter top, it gains strength from the bonding and the surface below.

The cost of veneers is similar to a crown, as he uses the same end lab where the product is made.  After Dr. Shanahan designs a smile, the lab makes and processes the veneers so he can have the best aesthetics and strength.

The process typically takes about one hour for the first tooth and another half an hour for each additional tooth.  During the second shorter appointment, the veneers are actually placed.  If a patient takes good care of the veneers, they can last anywhere between 15-25 years.

Treating Gum Disease, with Dr. Bryan Shanahan in Flagstaff, Arizona

Gum disease has been directly linked to heart disease, stroke and diabetes, according to Dr. Bryan Shanahan, dentist in Flagstaff, Arizona and by controlling gum disease, we can control all of the other entities in the body.

Dr. Shanahan says that the inflammatory reaction in gum disease is the same thing that happens with heart disease.  He adds the American Heart Association feels that keeping the mouth clean will improve the overall health in patients.  In England, he notes, they have found an improvement in patients who went to the dentist regularly by 37% in heart disease problems.

Gum disease by itself is a disease that happens regardless of what's going on, says Dr. Shanahan, and it's the inflammatory response and the same bacteria in gum disease that's linked to heart disease problems that we see.

Dr. Shanahan treats his patients with gum disease by getting all of the bacteria and plaque removed from below the gums to get things cleaned up.  Occasionally, antibiotics are given but that is only a short-term solution because getting the mouth clean is important.

Dental Implants, with Dr. Bryan Shanahan, Dentist in Flagstaff, Arizona

Dental implants are man-made roots that are placed in bone.  They are made of titanium because it is a unique material that the body actually grows on to, says Dr. Bryan Shanahan, dentist in Flagstaff, Arizona.  In the past, he says, we'd look at a bridge or partial denture but now with an implant, we can place the implant in the jaw and have the bone grow to it to act like a root.

Dr. Shanahan says that the procedure is less painful than most dental procedures, as bone does not have a lot of nerve endings.  His patients are often surprised how comfortable the procedure is.  The procedure itself can take anywhere from one hour to several, depending on how many implants are being placed.  With the use of technology such as cone beam laser imaging, he is not only able to get the most precise placement of the implant but with a lot less trauma and more quickly and efficiently.

Dental implants are one of the most successful procedures done in dentistry today, with a 94% success rate, which is "remarkable," says Dr. Shanahan.

Oral Appliances from a Dentist to Treat Sleep Apnea, with Dr. Bryan Shanahan on Flagstaff, AZ

Sleep apnea is a condition where a person's airway actually collapses on itself while sleeping.  As a result, they get limited or no oxygen to the brain, which leads to co-morbidities, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity, says Dr. Bryan Shanahan, dentist in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Over the counter mouth pieces may work marginally but not as well as a custom-fit one, Dr. Shanahan says.  If not fitted well enough, teeth can actually move or shift and you can also develop problems with the temporomandibular joint, he adds.  Having a custom-fit appliance that's perfectly adjusted to that patient is of "vital importance."

If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, Dr. Shanahan recommends visiting with your family physician because it is a killer and a growing epidemic in America.  From there, you can be referred to a local sleep lab in your area to get a definitive idea of what's going on.
