Dr Byers has enjoyed the private practice of general dentistry since 1992 in both Scottsdale and Sedona, AZ. A Native of Newcastle, ME, Dr Byers grew up in Oklahoma City, OK where he earned professional degrees in both Psychology and Dentistry. Upon graduation, he moved to Arizona and has not looked back.

“Seeking new opportunities to assist in solving patient’s dental problems, simply, comfortably and easily, are a hallmark of my professional philosophy. I have found through years of experience using computers to assist in patient care is extremely beneficial to all involved”. Dr Byers was invited to join Flagstaff Dental in early 2012 and began my associateship with Dr Shanahan and his team at Flagstaff Dental.

“The greatest benefit I can provide a patient is first, listening to their concerns, answering questions and addressing any fears they might have regarding their visit. Afterward, I believe a thorough exam, accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan, allows the patient to make choices in a caring treatment relationship based on trust.

Utilizing state of the art technology to make restorations such as crowns in a single visit that look and feel great is where our dentistry is TODAY. Replacing single missing teeth with precision placed dental implants or a whole mouth, with computer designed and milled dentures, make my job much more rewarding today than in the past.

Dr Byers is an avid Road Cyclist, Mountain Biker, Hiker, and Scuba Diver. He enjoys spending time with his pet Whippet, and traveling the world for adventure with his significant other.

Maintaining a Healthy Smile, with Dr. Ted Byers, Dentist in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona

To maintain your smile for a lifetime, Dr. Ted Byers, who sees patients in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona, says you need to visit your dentist on a regular basis.  In his own practice, at Flagstaff Dental, he often sees big time lapses in between visits for patients.  These patients can end up with a whole new series of problems that could have been prevented had they seen their dentist on a more regular basis.

Dr. Byers suggests asking your own dentist for their recommendation on frequency of visits.  He says that the best maintained smiles are the ones monitored by a dental team as well as the patient at home.  If something pops us at home, don't feel guilty or ashamed if you haven't been seen in a while.  "A good dentist will be happy to see you and get you back on track," he says.

Teeth Brushing and Flossing Options, with Dr. Ted Byers, Dentist in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona

Whatever one can do to remove 100% of the bacteria and plaque from their mouth everyday is what Dr. Ted Byers, of Flagstaff Dental in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona would recommend for that patient.  He says it is best to choose whatever works best for your own situation, whether it's an electronic toothbrush, such as Sonicare or an over the counter manual toothbrush.

Past the age of 35-50, most people have had a bit of bone loss and so flossing, in Dr. Byers's opinion, is a little overrated, especially when we get into our 40's and 50's because there is more space.  Dr. Byers has found the use of an oral irrigator, like a Water Pik to be beneficial, which flushes the food and bacteria around the teeth and mouth.  He says you can even pour Listerine into the reservoir to help disinfect the gums.

Dr. Byers uses a Water Pik twice a day himself, along with brushing with a Sonicare toothbrush and this is what he would recommend to family and friends.

Lack of Dental Insurance, with Dr. Ted Byers of Flagstaff Dental in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona

Dental insurance is a benefit many people have, especially if they work for a large corporation but there are also many people without any dental insurance, says Dr. Ted Byers, a dentist in both Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona.

Dr. Byers says that dental insurance in the past has typically been the lost leader because the limits that are placed on someone annually, as far as their benefits go, hasn't really changed much over the course of the last forty years.

If you don't have dental insurance, Dr. Byers says that usually the dental office will work with you to set up some sort of payment plan.  For those patients requiring a lot of dental work, it can be very expensive and those patients are best to find some type of funding source, Dr. Byers says.  He adds that even with dental insurance, it wouldn't pay for much of the expenses.

Dental X-Rays, Featuring Dr. Ted Byers of Flagstaff Dental in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona

X-rays are tools that dentists use to see many different things, says Dr. Ted Byers, a dentist with patients in both Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona.  X-rays help dentists see in between the teeth, beyond the roots of the teeth, to see what levels of bone there are to support the teeth, to see how many other teeth are around and to see the general condition of the mouth, he says.

There are different types of x-rays dentists can use, says Dr. Byers, ranging from little ones that are put inside the mouth to bigger ones that take bigger pictures of the mouth.  X-rays that take a picture of your whole head are 2-D panoramic x-rays and are like a map, Dr. Byers says.  Now, he says, there is a 3-D x-ray called cone beam imaging that is used to see a 3-D image of basically what's in your whole head, so a dentist can really see where the problems are.

Dr. Byers says that x-rays have really come a long way, as they are now digital and can be used electronically.

What is a General Dentist, Featuring Dr. Ted Byers of Flagstaff Dental in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona

A general dentist is where someone will go if they have a toothache or need to get their teeth cleaned.  Dr. Ted Byers of Flagstaff Dental in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona says that a general dentist is like a "quarterback of all the seven specialties of dentistry and is the first point of contact."

Usually, a dentist will have a dental hygienist to clean a patient's teeth but will do fillings, oral surgery, root canals and crown and bridge work.  Dr. Byers says that general dentists typically like a variety of work and that is why he chose general dentistry.  He enjoys oral surgery and implants the most, being somewhat of a "computer geek," and gets to use the cad cam technology in his office when making implants for his patients.

To find a general dentist that's right for you, Dr. Byers says it is best to ask for a referral from someone else who has had positive experience, such as if the office was clean and if the staff was friendly.  As patients really don't have an idea of what good dentistry is, Dr. Byers says they judge dentistry not necessarily on things that are dental-related.
